Acorn class 27th April 2018
News from week beginning 23rd April
Another busy week in Acorn Class this week…
In phonics in Reception this week we had a focus on tricky words and learnt 6 new ones: were, there, little, one, all and are. We also sang the Alphabet Rap and practised reading and writing words with adjacent consonants for example clown and toast. In Year One this week the children looked at alternative ways of writing the oo sound (ue, ew and u-e), alternative ways of writing the n sound (gn and kn) and revised the split digraph o-e as in hope. The children also worked on their individual writing targets and talked about where to put capital letters in their work.
In English this week the children researched different plants linking to our science topic this half term. They thought of what they might like to find out about plants and wrote down their ideas in question format. For example some children decided that they wanted to find out how tall sunflowers can grow and some children wanted to find out how long trees can live. The children then found out the answers to their questions using the Internet on the iPads and then wrote plant fact files based on their research.
In Maths this week the children were learning to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and about multiplication. One of the ways that they learnt about multiplication was through arrays which are a pictorial representation to help children understand times tables. For example an empty egg box has 3 columns and 2 rows which can be written as 3 x 2 = 6. If you fancy a maths challenge this weekend see if you and your child can find examples of arrays at home and then if you can think of the matching multiplication number sentences!
In other news in Science this week the children planted broad beans and in PE we continued to work on our agility and coordination with balls using our feet by learning football skills which the girls have now decided (after initially not being sure) is great fun!
Have a lovely weekend despite the return of the rain…
