Acorn class 13th October 2017
News from week beginning 9th October
Another busy week in Acorn Class this week!
In Phonics the Reception children learnt the digraph ‘ck’ which usually likes to sit at the end of a word e.g. sock. Digraph means two letters that make one sound so when the children sound out words that use this sound they will just make the ck sound once. They also learnt e, u and r and we waved our tricky finger at ‘to’ and ‘the’; see if your child can spot either of these tricky words if they appear in their reading book. The Year One children revised the sounds air, ure and er and wrote sentences using tricky words such as ‘was’ and ‘are’.
In Maths we learnt about 2D shapes. We named shapes and talked about their properties, e.g. a triangle has three straight sides and three corners. We then painted shape people pictures, made pictures using large foam shapes, drew big shapes on the playground and went for a shape hunt around the school and took photos of the shapes that we saw on the iPads.
In English we read the lovely Julia Donaldson story ‘Room on the Broom’. We had great fun drawing our favourite character from the story and explaining why we liked them so much and we loved drawing our own mud monsters and writing warning notes! The Year One children also wrote an alternative ending for the story whilst the Reception children practised their fine motor skills with zigzag drawing and cutting.
In other news in PE we worked on developing short gymnastics routines using the skills that we have learnt during this half term, which include the forward roll as you can see from the picture! We also learned about the Christian creation story in RE.
We hope you enjoyed the disco and look forward to seeing mummies and daddies at Parents Evenings on Monday and Tuesday night, there are still slots available if you have not yet made an appointment.
Have a lovely weekend.
The Acorn Team 🙂
