Acorn class 29th September 2017
News from week beginning 25th September
We have had a super exciting Maths and Science themed week this week!
In phonics this week the Reception children learnt the sounds m, d and g and revised the tricky word I by waving their tricky finger when they read it! The children are really starting to understand how to segment and blend simple words like ‘it’ to read them using their ‘robot arms’ and we are so proud of how well they are all doing. The Year One children revised the ng, or, ur and ar sounds and practised lots of tricky words by writing sentences that included them.
In our Science and Maths week we were lucky enough to have visits from a vet, a Naval Officer and a lady who works for a building company to name but a few and we heard about how important Maths is in each of their jobs. We also had an amazing Science workshop making “slime” which was fantastic! Have a look at the gallery to get a flavour of what we got up to.
In our Maths lessons this week we were exploring how Maths is all around us so we went on a number hunt around the school to see where we could spot numbers and took photos of them on the iPads; we matched conkers with number cards; matched dinosaurs with number cards that were hidden in the sand pit and drew our own chalk number lines outside on the playground. The Year One children also enjoyed a game of snakes and ladders in the playground (who knew that there was a 100 square out there!) and we filled in the missing numbers on a number square.
In other news we had our first ‘Plan, Do and Review’ session where the children designed a Play Doh animal and had to choose which colour they were going to use to make it. They then made it, carefully considering their design, and we took a lovely smiling photo to document their creation. In the next week or two, we are hoping the children will be able to review their animal and think about how they could make it even better next time.
Monday will be the start of the Reception children’s first full week at school so we hope you have a relaxing weekend and look forward to seeing them then. Also a reminder that it is school photo morning on Monday so that you can send your children in looking their best for their pictures.
