Acorn class 22nd September 2017
News from week beginning 18th September
We’ve had another lovely week!
In phonics, the Reception children learned the sounds and actions for p, i, n and the tricky word ‘I’ (tricky words are those that cannot be worked out using the usual sounds, they need to be sight-read). They practised reading high frequency words (common words such as it, in and at) and used the interactive TV to help them segment and blend words then match them with pictures. The Year One children revised the trigraph igh, the digraphs ee, ai and oa and the two different ways of pronouncing oo (long as in spoon and short as in book). They also revised the tricky words was, you, they, all, are, my and her. The Year Ones had a very successful first spelling test – they were so excited to show-off the words they have been practising and learning at home – well done to them and you parents for your support at home with this!
In English, we read the fabulous rhyming story The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson, the children loved it and joined in with the rhyming words and repeating words. They learned about rhyming words and looked in depth at the five main problems and solutions within the story.
In Maths, we continued learning about teen numbers and place value (tens and ones) using Numicon and dienes apparatus and used memory games, tower-making and they even hunted through pasta to help them with their understanding!
We had great fun labelling the parts of the body (thank you to Betty who was the body we drew around!). The children were really knowledgeable about where things are, including using the word ‘stomach’ (see the main photo). We discussed the big question ‘Who is God?’ and the children came up with some lovely answers. The Year One children also had their first formal session for their Reflection Journals – which was a beautiful photo of an Autumnal lane with leaves falling. We hope you enjoyed their thoughts about the picture in Parents’ Assembly.
It’s only one more week until the Reception children are in full-time so please, Reception parents, ask your child to put their things away themselves and leave as soon as you can in the morning, to enable them to make a smooth transition the week after.
Have a super weekend!
