Acorn class 22nd June 2018
News from week beginning 18th June
We have had another busy week in Acorn Class this week…
In phonics in Reception our focus was on writing tricky words and storybook language words such as ‘once’, ‘upon’, ‘time’, ‘who’ and ‘finally’ correctly. We also worked on reading words with adjacent consonants and writing sentences that contained tricky words independently. In Year One the children learnt a made-up vowel song; corrected a very badly written sentence (!); revised what a compound word is and revised the alternative oo digraph ue as in glue.
In English we had a brilliant time exploring a dinosaur theme this week! On Monday we discovered some dinosaur footprints in Acorn playground and wrote news reports and wanted posters to warn and let the rest of the school know what had happened. We then read the Julia Donaldson story ‘Tyrannosaurus Drip’ and used it as inspiration to write stories about dinosaurs independently. We are very proud of the children’s writing and their stories are proudly displayed on our Writing Wall.
In Maths we started to explore doubling and halving which we will continue next week. We played a doubles board game; doubled spots on ladybirds and halved a number of objects by drawing two chalk hoops outside on the playground and sharing the objects equally between them.
In other news in PE we have had brilliant fun completing obstacle courses and practising running races in preparation for Sports Day; we also watched Elm Class’s violin performance and in Science we sorted animals into animals groups e.g. amphibians and mammals.
Enjoy the wonderful weather this weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday for our trip to Gore Farm. The weather is looking hot so please make sure that your child is wearing sun cream and has a sunhat and water bottle with them. Children need to wear long-sleeved tops and long trousers because we are going into the meadow and it is tick season. Can they please also wear sensible shoes and bring wellies with them. Thank you!
The Acorn Team 🙂
