Acorn class 15th September 2017
News from week beginning 11th September
What a busy first full week back in Acorn Class!
This week the Reception children learnt their first three sounds in Phonics: s, a and t with the help of Sidney the snake. Once they had learnt each sound and action they played games to consolidate their learning such as organising objects that started with the s sound and objects that did not start with the s sound into different hoops. We are so proud of the children’s learning this week and we even started using our robot arms to sound-out and blend simple words like ‘at’! In Year One the focus this week has been on revising the digraphs sh, ch and the two pronunciations of the th digraph (long and short) and there was a focus on becoming more independent sentence writers.
In English we read the lovely story ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea.’ Monday and Friday allowed for some lovely focused work with just the Year One children for example the children drew their own story plans with interesting captions. During the rest of the week the children wrote shopping lists and invitations and drew some beautiful pictures of the tiger.
In Maths the focus for the Year One children was place value of teen numbers and they used the Numicon to investigate numbers such as 19 and then made paper chain teen numbers for a display in the classroom. The Reception children also made paper chains to represent smaller numbers such as 6 and played a variety of different maths games both with the adults in the classroom and with their new friends. A caterpillar ordering game on the computers was a particular hit!!
In other news we had two lovely PE sessions – the photo for this post shows us at the end of a rather energetic jumping session on Tuesday!!!
Thank you to all of the parents who attended our information evening on Tuesday, we hope you found it useful.
Have a wonderful weekend, fingers crossed for some sunshine…
