Acorn class 9th June 2017
News from week beginning 5th June
We’ve had a fantastic week.
The Year One children have been practising all the sounds they have learned, ready for the phonics check. They have worked really hard! The Reception children continue to work on reading and writing words with consonant clusters in (e.g. drink) and on the tricky words they have learned so far.
We had a super day on Tuesday when the children who will be joining Acorn in September came in for their first visit. They were lovely and so well-behaved. That morning, the Year One children had a great time in with Beech class, practising their handwriting and revising 3D shapes. The current Reception children had a super time in the new hall, doing phonics, Quick Maths and generally enjoying themselves!
In Maths, we continued with place value (tens and ones) and the Year One children were extended to hundreds, tens and ones. In English the children looked back at the story maps they created before half term and made story plans, showing what happens at the beginning, middle and end of their story, ready for writing them next week.
Now the children have learned about the weekly Jewish holiday, Shabbat, we started to look at the yearly holiday, Chanukah (also spelt Hannukah) – they even saw a real life Menorah. In Geography, the children learned about the differences between the jungle and the UK. They loved cutting and sticking the right animals and features onto the right region (jungle or UK).
The whole school watched a DVD in preparation for the Olympic judo champion’s visit in a couple of weeks’ time. They are so excited about the sponsored exercises they will be doing. Over half the money raised will go to the school so please dig deep!
Science Governor, Mrs Brown, very kindly took our nasturtium pots home to care for them over the half term. Most came back enormous! (see main photo) She did us proud. The seeds even wrote their own half term diary and sent us a postcard – the children’s eyes were out on stalks when we read them both! (thank you Mrs Brown!)
Have a lovely weekend
