Acorn class

News from week beginning 30th January

The children have had a great week. In RE they heard the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus and we video’d them acting out the story. We then discussed times that it might have been difficult for the children to show friendship to others and played friendship games with lots of different children. They made friendship bracelets then gave them to children they don’t usually play with – there was a lot of love in the room!

They learned about weight in Maths, using balance scales and using language like ‘heavier’ and ‘lightest’. The children particularly loved weighing their own shoes!

In English the children learned a story about three superheroes rescuing Mrs Pink, Mrs Cheyne and Mrs Dennett from being lost in the forest. They used actions to help them remember the story then drew a story map – drawing pictures to show the main events. The children then used post-it notes to stick onto their story maps to change the characters, setting and super objects used in the rescue. Next week we will build on this work…

In Phonics the Reception children revised all the tricky words they have learned so far and revised the sounds sh, th, ng and ch. They made their own ‘ng’ word books, with lovely pictures and labels of a king, ring, wing and someone singing. They were very proud! The Year One children revised split digraphs and the tricky words come, some, were and there then learned the alternative spellings aw and ey – they loved drawing and captioning a naughty monkey!

The children loved sorting materials (metal, wood, fabric, plastic and glass) into hoops then drawing the objects in the right places on their Venn diagrams. They suddenly started spotting all the different things made of metal and plastic etc around the room!
