Acorn class 16th September 2016
News from week beginning 12th September
Second week in and the Reception children are really settled and we are starting to see their lovely characters shining through! Year One children have worked hard with their learning and are very excited to be starting their online Maths games homework.
Reception children were very excited to meet Sidney the Snake who tells them about his adventures and helps them learn their letter sounds and associated actions. They learned s, a and t and have their weekly sound sheets to complete as from this week. They even started practising using their robot arms to help them blend the letter sounds together into words! Year One children revised sh, ch, the long and short pronunciations of the th digraph (e.g. long in three and short in feather) and some of the tricky words from last year.
In Science, we used everyday objects for the children to smell, hear, touch, see, taste (they loved the crisps!) then took them on a senses walk. They came up with many things they could hear, smell, see and feel and said some fabulous adjectives to describe them. The Year One children then went on to write senses poems, they were very proud to be poets!
In Maths, we looked at estimating, counting and ordering and introduced the Reception children to the colourful number plates, Numicon.
In RE, we went on a scavenger hunt to find some natural treasure. We talked about how these made us feel and what they made us want to say when we looked at them under a magnifying glass (e.g. Wow! That’s amazing!) with one girl saying it made her feel happy to see a pretty shell. We discussed who they thought made the world and then about Christians believing God did.
We look forward to seeing you at 5pm on Tuesday for our YR information evening, focussing on how you can help your child at home. Please bring any questions and concerns!
Have a great weekend
